Below is an email that i wrote my dear friend Danny Moran who was in the USA, regarding my plans to go on the campaign road. I am beginning these Campaign Diaries with this one because it is this email that confirms I was going for it.

September 28, 2007

Hi Dan,

Here is the continuation email about The Sign i got for the campaign.

Well, since deciding that i would consider running for the pff presidency last July, i've been looking at some religious statues of the Baby Jesus and Virgin Mary and Christ on the Cross which i have on top of a bookshelf at home but never prayed to them. They were always there for display (for protection of the family and home).

I decided about a month ago to fix up and clean up the shelf and well, pray for guidance. Little did i know that these prayers would become more meaningful day by day. After the kids would leave for school and work, i'd sit down and talk to my 'altar'. From a few seconds a day, to as much as two hours of just talking about everything. I was beginning to feel good and comfortable. Therapeutic. It was like a retreat. In fact, its like i'm on a retreat right now. It's like a preparation for the final battle.

Yes, it does get heavy. sometimes i do tear and cry a bit talking to the three statues in my bookstand.
Two weeks ago, i set up another 'praying area'. this time in my front garden / courtyard. i put a Baby Jesus i found around the house and a cross on top. I have a table and chairs in front of it...i also write, plan, and pray there. I now have two prayer areas were i sit down and relax and let-it-all-hang-out.

I light candles and talk to God in these prayer spots. In fact, i plan to put a prayer spot in my favorite relaxing areas on the property.
The altar in my family room, the bookshelf, has a print/poster of a Laughing Christ. It is something given to me by an old friend in the music industry about 20 years ago. I really loved that print and so i had it mounted. It was so 'Pop'. But I never prayed to it though. Till 30 days ago. The Laughing Christ has since been the Jesus Christ that i pray to.

A few days ago, in one of my prayer sessions i asked my Laughing Christ for a 'sign' that i should pursue this 'Presidency'. I was telling him that it would be expensive to campaign and other stuff related to campaigning like travelling and hotels and lonely days without the kids because i do plan on staying on the road. So i asked for a sign that only i could identify.

Well this is what happened yesterday morning.

I decided to make a list of things i wanted to bring on the campaign trail/tour. I decided kasi that i would visit all 17 provinces in Mindanao in one tour. That could mean 15-20 days away from home. Especially since i wanted to see the Governors as well.

So i started writing the list of things to take on the tour. I decided i wanted to bring a bible. But the one we have is quite bulky. So i looked into the old bookshelf and to my surprise, i found a little mini-bible. It was called, The Travelling Companion. My hair stood because this was something i had never ever seen in my bookshelf. (eventually my youngest daughter rebecca said it was given to her by a cousin). And of course, the title of the bible was, Travelling Companion (something i was looking for). As i turned the pages, i saw prayers and stuff and, even Christmas Carols printed on the latter pages. You know what the sign was?

In the very last page, actually in the inside of the back cover....there it was.....a colored print drawing of The Laughing Christ. That was my sign. I never ever knew there was such a thing as a Laughing Christ. I always thought that my Laughing Christ Print was a novel and pop idea that no one else but me had. It was cool to have it. But When i saw it in the mini travelling bible, i froze and started to cry. Never in my wildest dreams did i dream that. I went on my knees and said, Thank You.

To me Dan, that was the Sign. He wants me to go out there and campaign for this presidency. So i'm going for it.

Best.

Ed

Day 01 - "I Want to be President" PDF Print E-mail

Johnny Rom (that's Romualdez to most) and I leave the PFF office at around 4pm. As I've done countless of times in the last 4 years, i hitch a ride close to home.

Along the way, we rap. All sorts of talk.
But it's always two decent men talking.

Today his word is done.
Johnny Romualdez is not running for PFF president.
In the confines of his car, he gives me an emphatic "No!"
But I try to convince him.
I promise to support him, to help in his campaign. To present new ideas and concepts.
But he is committed.
"No!" is the final answer and it is complete.

With finality I tell him I will run.
He looks at me and tells me in the Johnny monotone, "You won't get a single vote."
I look at him, smile and say, "You're right. I'll get 32".
We've got a dinner bet.

I get home and begin to pack for something I call the "40-Day Presidential Campaign and Visitation Tour". From 0ctober 17 (the Day Before my departure) until November 25 (the Day After elections), i'll be focused on a presidency that i've actually begun considering in 2002. The president then was Rene Adad and his gensec was Mike Villadolid. In recollection, i think i did tell Mike V that i'd like to go for it one day.

So here I am. Riding on a platform that i think Joseph Blatter used when he won the FIFA presidency in 1998. I call my simple platform, "Spread The Wealth, Share The Wealth".

So simplistic and yet...no president in the past 100 years (centennial) nor any candidate running today; nor any PFF officer in the last two terms; has made any move to implement it. It's such a 'no brainer' that no one now wants to accept the fact that it's so easy and simple to do. So they complicate lives with so many unnecessary programs and plans. I don't see the logic.

It's not even a Political move as some may claim.
It's a SOLUTION.
The ONLY solution i've found to solving our ONLY problem.

0ur problem is that our beloved sport is NOT POPULAR.
We need to POPULARIZE it before we can feed on it.
And until it is POPULAR, we will STARVE.
Each one of us, hungry as the other.

If one does not understand what the word POPULAR means in football, all one needs to do is WATCH international football on TV.
You see those crowds? The flares and the fireworks? The huge banners and streamers? The chanting? The violence? The 'live' stadium audience? Can you imagine the size of the TV broadcast audience? It's just like domestic basketball. PBA and all the rest.

"OUR BASKETBALL IS THE FOOTBALL OF THE WORLD!"

We need to get somewhere near that FAN level if we football lovers want food on our tables.
We need to FOCUS on the concept of the POPULARIZATION OF FOOTBALL.
Has anyone really planned for this in the last 100 years?
I don't think so.
Well, I have. But only in the last 5-years or so.
Can this make me President?
Well, until I try i won't really know.
So I'm gunning for it. The Presidency of the Philippine Football Federation.
Wishfully, these 40-Days will help me.
Not only to win it but to also convince all 32-Provincial Football Association members to CHANGE THE WAY THEY THINK. And that only by changing the way we think will we change our lives.

"THINK POPULARIZATION".

I want to eat well. And i want good food on the table for my family due to a career in football and no other. And i want this for all PINOY footballers (meaning fans and players).
I can only HOPE and i can only PRAY that what i do in the next 40-Days will mean more than the best "40-Days 0f My Life".
I want to be President.

For the Good of Football

Heavenly Father,

Help us to work together in this game that we love,
Direct us to form young men and women
of good moral character and integrity,
Guide us to be charitable
to the needs of the poor and the homeless,
Instill in our Families and our Communities
the values of fairplay and justice,
May we always remember,
that in all our efforts to develop the game,
We will offer it up, for your Goodness.
And may the good we do for football,
always lead us to your Goodness.

Amen
